You are watching: Chevy 5.7 rocker arm torque specs

Hi I need to know the torque specs for the rocker arms on a small block Chevy 350. Is there a certain pattern? I"ve seen specs on the rocker studs but nothing on the rocker arm nuts. I"ve also heard something about tightening them until there is no more play in the push rod, and then 3/4 turn. In what direction I dont know.

Rocker arm adjustmentYou can adjust hydraulic lifters with the motor running or not running. Youwill need some sort of oil control device to do it with the motor running. Themost accurate way with the motor off is one cylinder at a time with the cylinder on the compression stroke. There is also a way to do part of the valves then rotate the engine 360 degrees and do the rest. That methodescapes me. (Can anyone refresh me?) The adjustment is the same in all cases. Find zero lash and tighten 1/2 to one full turn more.

Hey dude, it has been years since i worked in chevy dealership but i prefered engine work when i was there. I did it so much i got lazy and would run the nut down about a half inch in each stud. Regaurdless of which pistion was up, knowing that about half thread is what itis going to end up with anyway. From that point the valves were tight enough to allow the engine to run but i had chatter on all the rockers. Then i would turn then slowly crank down until the engine started missing, At that time back off just a little and leave it there. move on to the next. (this only works if you have hydrolic lifters that have been pumped up) this is the fasted way i found.

For HUH?, set the number one cylinder at TDC firing position and set the exhaust valves on cylinders,1, 3, 4, 8 and the intakes on,1, 2, 5, 7.Rotate the crank 360º and set the exhaust valves on cylinders, 2, 5, 6, 7 and the intakes on, 3, 4, 6, 8.According to Chiltern, Haynes left out number 1 cylinder in theirs.BTW for Chevy.Edit: Preload, Chiltern says 1 1/2 turns in and Haynes reckons 1.

malc,Thanks for your reply on setting valve lash. Your method is fast andplenty accurate enough for hydraulic lifters. When you pass fifty years of ageyou lose many things. Memory is usually the second, I can"t really remember the first!Dave
Obvioiusly most people are concentrating on lash adjustment.The rocker arm nut still requires TORQUE.If the self-locking nut has insufficient torque the adjustment will not stay constant.Look for about 10-15 lb/ft torque on the nut-to-thread drag.

I think he"s talkin" about the nuts. If the torque is less, replace the nut as the self locking feature has been compromised.
