You are watching: Can you use acetone as paint thinner

difference between "acetone" "paint thinner" and also "mineral spirits"?I"ve seen all three of this in paint stores and wonder what the difference is, from what I"ve used, they it seems to be ~ to be the very same thing. -Aaron
I can"t tell friend the chemical difference, yet acetone is really hot v a rapid evaporation rate. Acetone will soften or elevator many species of paint. Mineral spirits and paint thinner room pretty much the same thing. Both space slower dying, mild solvents because that reducing enamels and also varnish. Once it involves cost, repaint thinner is normally cheaper.I constantly have a gallon of both in the shop and at home.

Ya, ns think acetone is the "strongest", itll melt a lotta stuff. I prefer laquer thinner for basic purpose cleaning, etc, i buy the in 5-gallon can be ~ lol. Mineral spirits, top top the other hand, is reasonably weak because that use with automotive paints IMO. As much as their makeup, Im sure they share some common ingredients and also like PDMD said, they definitely have really different evaporation rates.

So when I wipe down a primed surface ar in ready for paint, mineral spirits is best? It"ll clean off any finger prints yet not damage the primer? But because that cleaning greasy things like drivetrain or suspension things, acetone will cut the grease best?I understand I"ve placed either acetone or paint thinner in a plastic Taco Bell cup before and also within a half hour the bottom that the cup had actually softened and leaked everywhere.

Ummm, i think she on the ideal track, other than for the acetone component for cleaning grease. By the I median acetone is kinda overkill because that grease, etc. These compounds are more suited for cleaning/removing chemicals, favor paint. Grease and buildup have the right to be removed with much less harsh solvents than acetone. I use heavy duty stove cleaner and/or usual household cleaners for that. And also the truth that acetone evaporates so fast would do it kinda hard to use for something favor that also. I hardly ever use acetone, possibly for remove cured paint or something favor that. I remember as soon as I had actually a coffee deserve to that I provided to capture solvent run with my repaint guns and also I offered acetone come clean among em that ns inadvertently had allowed paint to dry in I also would periodically throw my hard plastic measuring cups in to soak while ns painted. Well after including that acetone, ns threw a measure up cup in there together usual, and when I acquired through spraying, ns went earlier to clean mine gun and also noticed the cup to be gone. I assumed to myself "Im sure I threw the cup in there". Climate it dawned on me whatd taken place lol. Sure enough, i reched under in the can and felt a glob the something comparable in consistency to very soft putty
